Yes, Probably Stolen has a free Demo, and you can download it now from its own Steam page. It launched on September 14, 2026 and received an aquaculture update on October 19. It is not the full game: it does not include all nine launch starting scenarios or the 1.0 ending. The developer says the Demo will be removed when version 1.0 releases on October 28, and that Demo saves will work in 1.0, although a fresh start is recommended.

How to get the Demo
The Demo is a separate Steam app from the full game, with its own listing. Open the official Demo page and install it from there. It is free.
Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i3 or equivalent, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 650 Ti or equivalent, DirectX 10 and 1 GB of storage as the minimum. Our download guide walks through installation.
What the Demo includes
The Demo lets you run the shop, appraise goods, manage rent and try production systems such as water. Community references separate the Demo's playable starts from the announced 1.0 roster. Some launch starts, such as Chemist, are reported as locked.
The Demo's Steam page lists English, German, Japanese, Russian and Simplified Chinese. Spanish, French and Polish are listed only for the full game.
From playtest to Demo
Before the Demo, there was an open Steam playtest that started in August. The developer reported in late August that 100,000 players had tried it. The Demo replaced it on September 14, alongside the release date announcement.
The developer said in August that you would be able to transfer saves from the playtest to the Demo. The Demo also introduced the Water Merchant start. See the playtest guide for the history.
What changed in Update 049
The Demo arrived with Update 049, a large patch. It added a new early-game machine and two challenge perks. It also added equip mode for tools and a Toolbox that Dr. Jackson sells after day 14, which lets keys 1 to 9 equip tools.
Quality-of-life additions included multi-item selection, inventory sorting and previewing containers and machines before buying. Many bug fixes and balance changes came too, including the animal cage rework and perk adjustments.
The Aquafarmer update
On October 19, the developer added aquaculture to the Demo through a new Wild's Network upgrade. A retired aquafarmer sells the equipment to raise fish in tanks. You start with a basic water circulation system, a stock of tilapia and fish food.
Some images in the announcement show the 1.0 interface, which is not in the Demo yet. Our aquaculture guide covers the upkeep and breeding loop.
Will my Demo save work in 1.0?
The developer says Demo saves are compatible with 1.0. They also strongly recommend starting a new game to avoid potential bugs. A fresh start gives you the full 1.0 rules from the first day.
If you want to keep your Demo save, back it up first. Update 049 added a Discover button to the load screen that finds saves added manually, which can help when moving files.
When the Demo ends
The developer's October 21 announcement says that once 1.0 is released, the Demo will no longer be available. Do not count on an installed copy working indefinitely. If you want to try the game for free, do it before October 28.
Availability is time-sensitive. Check the Steam page again on launch day.
Mods in the Demo
Community mods exist for the Demo. The developer warns that mods made for the Demo will likely not be compatible with the full game. Official Steam Workshop support arrives with 1.0.
Our mods guide explains how to check compatibility and back up before installing.
Demo versus full game
| Demo | Full game (1.0) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Paid, on Steam |
| Available | Now, until 1.0 launches | From Oct 28, 2026 |
| Starting scenarios | Subset | 9 |
| Difficulty options | Before the 1.0 expansion | 4 |
| Shop buyout ending | No | Yes |
| Workshop mods | No | Yes |
Getting the most out of the Demo
The developer recommends Apprentice as the beginner start, a generalist route where you upgrade as you go. That is a good way to see most systems in the Demo. Water Merchant is another option if you want to focus on one production chain.
Try the systems that interest you before launch. The Demo is free, so it is the cheapest way to decide whether the full game suits you. Our game wiki hub lists guides for each system.
Known Demo limits
The Demo does not include the 1.0 ending where you buy and own the store. It also lacks the expanded difficulty options, the new starting perks and Steam Workshop support. The full localization list arrives with 1.0 as well.
Some starts are not playable, and some announcement images show the 1.0 interface rather than the Demo's. Treat anything from the 1.0 preview as coming later, not as missing from your copy.
