To make water in Probably Stolen, first get a supply from rations, bottled water or an unlocked tap, or produce it with equipment such as a Moisture Farm. A Moisture Farm needs power and a suitable empty container, and it produces water overnight. Never assume new water is pure: test it, identify the contamination, and choose a treatment that targets that problem. Test again afterwards and label the product by the quality you measured.

Where your first water comes from
You can start with water you already have, such as rations or bottled water. Taps are another route once unlocked. An August playtest patch added Wild's Network upgrades named Gutterflow on Tap and Rustwater on Tap, alongside a Retired Water Merchant upgrade.
Production equipment offers a steadier supply. Community references describe a Moisture Farm that runs overnight. Whichever source you use, the water still needs checking before you sell it.
Setting up a Moisture Farm
Give the Moisture Farm power and an appropriate empty container to fill. Then let the overnight production cycle run. In the morning, inspect what you got rather than labelling it straight away.
Power and containers are real costs. Count electricity, the container and any treatment you will need when you work out whether the setup pays. A machine that runs every night still has to earn more than it consumes.
Test before you treat
Testing is the step that turns water into a product. Measure quality and identify what is wrong with the water before you pick a treatment. Different contaminants need different fixes.
Update 049 fixed a bug where the last scan tooltip was not immediately visible after scanning a container with the Aquascan. It also fixed unexpected behaviour if you dragged a container right after scanning. If your build is older, scan results may behave differently.
Choosing the right treatment
Filters, UV equipment, tablets and the portable HydraTech purifier each solve different problems. That is why there is no universal "filter once for pure water" recipe. Match the tool to the contamination your test found.
Some tools have limits. The HydraTech portable purifier is associated with Base Water quality and is not a route to 100% purity. The HydraTech guide covers it in detail. Update 049 also stopped the UV filter from being used on items you do not own.
Re-test after every treatment
Treatment does not guarantee a result. Re-test the water after each step and compare it with the grade you are aiming for. If contamination remains, choose the next treatment based on the new reading.
Update 049 fixed a bug where pouring a water ration into a filter did not filter it. Small precision errors in liquid calculations were also improved. If you see odd results in an older save, update before troubleshooting.
Label honestly
Label each container by its measured quality, not by what you hoped to produce. The developer describes the Water Merchant start as test, purify, re-label, and adds "or not. Liability is yours." Customers can confront you over mislabeled water.
Update 049 fixed a case where a customer confronted the player about an incorrect water quality label on an empty container. Real mislabeling is still your risk. Honest labels protect your reputation and repeat business.
How water is valued
Update 049 clarified how water goods work. A water container counts as a water good only while it holds liquid; when empty, it counts as a household good. Market events now reprice both the liquid and the container.
Premium Spring Water gained the Water tag, but non-Upper Level customers and tourists will not accept it. Know who you are selling to. The water pitcher is also classified as a household item.
Equipment that helps a water business
The water trading guide can be bought from Dr. Jackson, according to an August playtest patch. The developer also added a water manual in the same period. Read it before you build a production chain.
Update 049 made the Bottle Printer upgradeable with electronic parts, unlocking normal and large bottle printers. The Toolbox, sold by Dr. Jackson after day 14, holds tools including the blue and red labelers. Keys 1 to 9 then equip the matching tool.
Water Merchant start
If you want to learn water from day one, choose Water Merchant. Community scenario data says it starts with testing and purification equipment. The developer pitches it as becoming a water mogul in a place where pure water costs more than gold.
It is a good second run after Apprentice. Our tier list compares it with the other starts.
A simple water routine
Each evening, set the Moisture Farm running with power and an empty container. Each morning, test what it produced. Treat only what the test shows, then test again.
Label every container by its final reading before it goes on sale. Keep a note of what each batch cost. After a few days you will know which treatments are worth it.
Common questions
How do I get water in Probably Stolen? Use rations, bottled water or unlocked taps, or produce it with equipment such as a Moisture Farm.
Does the Moisture Farm make pure water? Not automatically. Test the result before you label it.
Which purifier should I use? It depends on the contamination your test finds. Filters, UV equipment, tablets and the HydraTech tool each target different problems.
What happens if I mislabel water? Customers can confront you. Label by the measured quality to avoid it.
Making water profitable
Price every batch against its inputs: the container, the power, and each treatment consumable. Revenue from a premium label is not profit if three treatments went into it. Track a small test batch before scaling up.
Once your water business is stable, aquaculture is a natural next step, since fish tanks also depend on water quality. Read the aquaculture guide and the money and rent guide before expanding.
